Integrity, Fairness, and Respect Together

There’s a difference between appreciating integrity, fairness, and respect in the abstract and living them as ideals. Make a small sign that says “INTEGRITY, FAIRNESS, RESPECT,” and tape it to the frame of your computer screen. Focus on it for just a minute at the beginning and at the end of every day for a week. You’ll find yourself thinking of things that you can do to improve in your management of others. You will make a difference in your effectiveness as a leader and as a manager. But the very best thing about living the principles of integrity, fairness, and respect in your job is seeing others start to do the same.

I’ll never forget, after a few weeks as a new turn-around CEO, overhearing a conversation among a group of five or six factory workers who were meeting informally to solve a problem that bridged their areas of respective responsibility. One asked, “What’s the most fair thing to do here?” A moment later another answered, “Whatever we do we’ve got to do it quickly and in a way that everyone understands our thinking.” This comment was followed by, “And we’ve got to make sure that whatever we do is in sync with what everyone’s been told before now.”

I still get a little choked up thinking about that moment. Not only was I proud of what was taking place, but I also knew that a new style of working was emerging that would have a profound effect on everyone’s life at work, and that the future of the company was looking up.
